Instructions for Operating the Mind
(Delivered at birth. Most copies are lost during the installation of society.)
- Time is the currency of life
Everything else can be restored.
Time cannot.
Spend it as if you know it is limited.
Because it is.
- Attention is the fuel of an idea
Ideas do not grow from desire.
They grow from attention.
What you observe regularly begins to organize itself.
- Where your attention is, there you are
The body may be in one place.
Attention may be somewhere else.
Life happens where attention is.
- Attention sustained over time arranges meaning coherently
Meaning is not an event.
Meaning is a pattern that emerges when attention remains present long enough.
- Remember yourself when others define you
People define what they see.
Sometimes what they want to see.
Sometimes what they fear.
None of that is required to become you.
- Labels reveal the direction of an attack
A label is not an identity.
It is often an attempt to simplify something complex.
Observe the label.
Do not move into it.
- Political correctness must not require moral incorrectness toward yourself
Respect others.
Do not abandon yourself.
If belonging to a group requires you to deny your own experience, the price is too high.
- Religious beliefs are tools, not the boundaries of the universe
The map is not the territory.
An explanation is not reality.
Belief can be a bridge.
It does not have to become a cage.
- Fanaticism is life inside an idea that has lost its centre
When an idea becomes more important than reality, fanaticism begins.
When the centre disappears, the frame becomes a prison.
- Flosculization signals the absence of signal
When the same phrase is repeated instead of understanding, check whether meaning has left the room.
- Complete darkness is often information
A lack of information is not the same as an absence of information.
Sometimes silence is a message.
Sometimes emptiness is a trace.
Sometimes deletion is intentional.
- Noise is potential
Noise is not the enemy.
Noise is raw material.
Filtering is not destruction.
Filtering is distillation.
- The ego is a user interface
Do not believe everything it displays.
Do not try to destroy it either.
Use it.
- Collaboration is intelligence in motion
One person can have an idea.
Several people can create an ecosystem.
- A neighbour is an action
Not an identity.
Not a group.
Not a label.
A neighbour is the way you appear in the world.
- A soul tribe is recognized through resonance
Not through blood.
Not through status.
Not through slogans.
Through the quality of exchanged attention.
- Stability is the frame in which change has meaning
Too much order suffocates life.
Too much chaos erases form.
Creation emerges between them.
A stable frame is one that can accept meaningful change.
A frame preserves coherence long enough for change to become form.
- Do not do to others what they do not want done to them. Ask.
No definition is final.
No story is finished.
Life continues to write itself.
Remain curious.
Final note
If you become lost:
Reduce speed.
Find your attention.
Find your centre.
Continue.
The system is designed for iterative sense-making.
Open tomorrow.
